The Impact of Conflicts and Instability on Women and Girls in Africa (2000-2024)

African has faced numerous challenges over the past decades, with conflicts, political instability, and socio-economic issues impacting its population. Among the most affected are women and girls, who bear the brunt of displacement, violence, and limited access to essential services. This report examines the major issues affecting women and girls across the continent, specifically health, education, democracy and human rights, and agriculture. This work is to provide a review of the estimated number of women and girls displaced by these conflicts and wars in various regions, highlighting the causes and consequences of such displacements.

Health

•  Maternal Mortality: The continent accounts for 62% of all deaths from preventable causes during childbirth.

•  HIV AIDS: Women and girls are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, with many lacking access to necessary healthcare services.

Education

•  Illiteracy Rates: Approximately 50% of women in Africa are illiterate.

•  Access to Education: Many girls face barriers to education due to cultural, economic, and security issues.

Democracy and Human Rights

•  Gender-Based Violence: One in three African women experience domestic violence or sexual abuse at some point in their lives.

•  Political Participation: Women are underrepresented in political processes and decision-making roles.

Agriculture

•  Land Ownership: Only 10% of African women own land, despite 60% working in the agricultural sector.

•  Economic Empowerment: Women in agriculture often lack access to financial services and markets.
